Dong Dinh Museum
10 kms from down town, on mountain-side of major road up to the peak. Dong Dinh named by the native plant, Caryota mitis lour, Burmese fishtail palm. This is the first private museum in Da Nang, found by Mr. Doan Huy Giao.

Things to do in Sontra, Goddess of Mercy, Hai Sontra

Son Tra Quan Yin, Goddess of Mercy at Linh Ung Pagoda
Son Tra Quan Am or Son Tra Goddess of Mercy is the in-official symbol of Danag city, similar to the Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Unveiled from July 2010 at Linh Ung – Bai But Pagoda, Quan Am statue and Linh  Ung pagada is is now known as one of the most significant pilgrimage destinations for Buddhists in Vietnam, taking 6 years to build.
Like  in Brazil, the Quan Am statue is 69.7 metres in height and positioned on a lotus shaped platform which is 35 metres in diameter. There are 17 stories built inside the statue. Each storey has 21 Buddha idols.
Personally, I assume the Son Tra Quan Am holds the city peace and spiritual life.

Son Tra Giant Banyan Tree
An amazing and unique giant banian tree with dozens of roots spanning down to ground, Hon Nghe point,  North –east of the peninsula. No ones know exactly how old the tree is. For logals, the tree may reach up to 1,000  year – old. 20m hight. 9 root- clusters. Largest roots reach up to 1m in diameter.
17 kms from the city centre, winding & hilly roads, the tree is a favourite place for tree lovers and alike ones, esp during the hot summer days.On clear days, there is a good view forwarding Danang, Son Tra main path and Cham Island.
For reasons, I prefer to name the Son Tra giant tree as living folks heritage and spirit.

Built in 1965 by US army, the Monkey Moutain Helicoter Port was a stragic site for supplying, acessing and withdrawing to/from mountain- bases.
Almost things “Gone with the wind”, except part of landing yard,  memorial sizeable board and the sad war memories.
Fantastic link for old Son Tra or Monkey Moutain US Base picture, except few wrong words and names. They must name the sourrounding beach as Danang Beach. Poor old men !!!

Explore the forest path for monkeys
The peninsula was named  Monkey Mountain by US troops, as there were many monkeys at the early time in the mountain, during the US war in Danang.
Very few green trails  offer an opportunities for monkeys watching. Beware of following the right guide for eco tour while enjoy the monkeys and nature.

At present, Son Tra Nature Reserve on Son Tra Peninsula abounds with an eco-system of coastal tropical forests protected under the national regulations for forbidden forests. About 60% of the forest land on the peninsula are primeval jungles, including endemic species of peninsula forests in Indochina, such as Parashorea stellata – Kury, Parashorea stellata – Kurz, Combretum quadrangulare Kurz, … and many fruit trees such as strawberry, persimmon, myrtus …

Another unique feature of the Son Tra Nature Reserve is the existence of about 12 herds of brown-legged (or five-coloured) langurs, scientifically known as pygathrix nemaeus. This is an extremely rare species with only 200 individuals living in Vietnam and in Son Tra forests. In addition, there are other rare species such as the yellow monkey, red-faced monkey, muntjac, wild boar and musk-deer; 106 species of birds including the silver pheasant (scientific name as polyplectron germaini), 23 species of reptiles and countless species of insects.

  2. Greetings from Vietnam, from a late night.
    Thanks for your comment
Could you please clear why saying Rep. Bob Lynn.

Pleiku is one of my favourite corner with friends, nature and history. Mr. Ha Trong Hai is one of leading local Tour Operator who has deep knowledge about the historical site.

Hope to see you in Plieku soon,

    • That is his title. He is probably a state or national Representative of his home community at the state or national congress in Washington.

I was at the AFVN radio station on what we called Monkey Mountain from December 1969-June 1970. On a return trip to Vietnam in 2001 I asked but was not allowed to visit Son Tra. I was told it was a miitary installation and not open to the public or tourists. I am happy that it is now open for tourism and that your country is doing well. I became very fond of the Vietnamese people during my time there under unfortunate circumstances.
